As part of my trans advocacy work, I run three support groups — one for trans women, one for cisgender spouses/partners of folks in transition, and one for parents of trans kids.
I asked moms to share their letters to their trans kids.

To my baby, my firstborn, my best friend — you are the reason I’m a mom. I wasn’t expecting you, but I also never expected to be able to love someone as much as I love you.
The past 19 years haven’t always gone the way I hoped, the way I wanted for you. Everything we went through made you you. I’m proud of the person you have become. I’m proud of you for being honest with yourself, and becoming who you were meant to be.
You are an amazing human, and everyone that has been lucky enough to meet you knows that. You’ve been a friend and role model to so many, probably more than you realize. I’m excited to see where the future takes you.

The day you came out to me three years ago was bittersweet. I felt so many emotions. Looking back I see how brave you were to share your authentic self with me. How hard it must have been to hide that for so many years.
These three years we have been on this journey together. The good and bad (the bad being other people).
I am so very proud of all you have overcome and continue to overcome.
